Our Creative Expression Policy
At New Brighton Creative Futures, we believe art belongs in the everyday. Murals, portraits, and public works are not just decoration — they are stories told in colour and shape, celebrating people, place, and imagination.
This policy explains the principles we follow when creating and curating art in public spaces. It’s our way of making sure the work we produce is open, respectful, and firmly rooted in the community we serve.
Our Principles
Freedom of expression: we uphold the right to create and share art in public, in line with Article 10 of the Human Rights Act.
Community pride: our projects celebrate local heritage, stories, and heroes.
Diversity of style: from portraits to abstract, from playful to profound, we welcome creativity in many forms.
Responsibility: while we defend artistic freedom, we also recognise the need to protect public safety, respect, and heritage.
What We Support
Portraits and storytelling about real people and local heroes — always with consent.
Works that draw from history, folklore, and heritage, connecting past and present.
Abstract, geometric, and colourful designs that transform walls and spaces.
Cheeky, playful pieces that make people smile or think, without crossing into harm.
What We Don’t Support
We do not commission or display art that:
Promotes hatred, violence, or discrimination.
Uses obscene or pornographic imagery.
Defames or attacks individuals or groups.
Breaches planning, conservation, or heritage rules.
Permissions and Consent
Every project is carried out with:
Property owner permission for the wall or space.
Subject consent for portraits and likenesses.
Compliance with planning and heritage regulations where required.
Working with the Community
We see art as a shared endeavour. For larger public works, we engage with local residents, businesses, and partners to make sure projects add value and reflect community voices. Feedback is welcomed, and we are committed to listening with openness and respect.
How We Decide
When evaluating a new work, we ask three simple questions:
Does it add artistic and cultural value?
Does it connect with the community or place?
Does it meet our responsibilities under this policy?
Keeping It Current
This policy applies to all art commissioned or supported by New Brighton Creative Futures CIC. We will review it regularly to keep it relevant as the town and its creative landscape evolve.
In Short
We exist to make New Brighton brighter, more thoughtful, and more alive through art. Expression is our foundation, but so is respect. By holding both together, we aim to leave a legacy the community can be proud of.
