A wayfinding strategy for New Brighton. From the station to the sea, in one clear line.
Step off the train at New Brighton and almost everything a visitor could want is within ten minutes’ walk. The OpenAIR Gallery. The independents of the Victoria Quarter. The promenade, Fort Perch Rock and Marine Lake. Nothing tells you so. In 2024/25, 1.19 million journeys started or ended at the station, and nine in ten of Wirral’s visitors come for the day, deciding where to go on foot. If the next good thing isn’t signed, most of them never find it.
Finding New Brighton is our answer: one wayfinding system for the whole town. Clear maps and walking times, a look people recognise, the town’s stories built into every sign, and a digital layer that’s already live, with our five free Hello New Brighton boards logging 765 visits between 7 and 12 October. We want to start with a pilot on the route most visitors should take: station first, then the Victoria Quarter, then the sea. Under ten minutes on foot, cheap to build and easy to measure.
Who it’s for. Wirral councillors and officers, the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority, Merseyrail, local businesses and community groups, and anyone who lives in or loves New Brighton. It sets out the evidence, what good looks like elsewhere, and exactly what we’re asking for.
It’s a working draft, and we want it argued with. Read it, share it, and tell us what we’ve missed.
