The Next Chapter

New Brighton already has a connection with SNIK.

Their mural Cold Tenderness, hidden behind Oakland Gallery, became a quiet landmark in the Victoria Quarter — a piece people actively seek out, photograph and return to. It marked the moment world-class stencil art arrived in New Brighton.

Now, SNIK are returning to create a brand-new mural — a major new commission for the OpenAir Gallery and one of the most ambitious artworks ever planned for the town.

Entwined is a large-scale portrait mural created by internationally recognised stencil duo SNIK in the Victoria Quarter of New Brighton.

The work draws inspiration from the volunteers behind New Brighton in Bloom, whose planting of hanging baskets, street planters and seasonal flowers brings colour and life to the area throughout the year. Their work often happens quietly and without recognition, yet it shapes the character of the town in a powerful way. The mural serves as a tribute to that spirit of care, pride and local stewardship.

The portrait appears interwoven with flora, reflecting the relationship between people, place and the natural elements that shape a community. The figure emerges softly from the tones and textures of the brickwork, designed to feel embedded within the architecture of the street rather than sitting on top of it.

Rather than dominating the building, the piece integrates with it. The intention was for the artwork to feel as though it belongs to the environment itself, echoing the quiet, ongoing work of the volunteers who help the town flourish.

The completion of Entwined marks another milestone in the development of New Brighton’s street art programme and the wider cultural identity of the town.

Over the past eight years the Victoria Quarter has gradually evolved into a concentrated OpenAir gallery, attracting internationally recognised artists while remaining rooted in the local community that made it possible. What began as a small initiative has grown into one of the most concentrated clusters of large-scale murals in the United Kingdom.

Many cities have street art spread across large urban areas. In New Brighton, the murals sit within a walkable creative quarter where art, public space and independent businesses exist side by side. This density creates a unique cultural experience and continues to attract visitors, artists and creative attention to the town.

Artist quotes

“We’re always interested in how people and nature overlap in the spaces we live in. With this wall we wanted the figure to feel almost absorbed by the building and the plants around her. Something that belongs to the street rather than sitting on top of it.” Nik Ellis (Snik)

“The work being done by New Brighton in Bloom already brings a natural, organic beauty to the street, so the aim wasn’t to compete with that. Instead we wanted the woman to feel like she’s becoming part of the place itself, almost like an echo of the community and the care that goes into it.” Laura Perrett (Snik)

A Community Effort

This project would not have been possible without the commitment of many partners, volunteers and supporters who have helped shape New Brighton’s creative landscape.

Particular recognition goes to Daniel Davies and the Rockpoint Leisure team, whose long-term investment in the Victoria Quarter helped create the foundations for a thriving creative district.

The mural also celebrates the work of New Brighton in Bloom, whose volunteers continue to transform the streets through planting, care and dedication to the local environment.

For New Brighton Creative Futures CIC, projects like this are about more than individual artworks. They support the town’s creative economy, attract visitors and help build a cultural identity that belongs to the community itself.
